Best Buy sets e-waste recycling record in 2012

Best Buy stores nationwide collected more than 170 million pounds of unwanted electronics and appliances to set a new high for recycling electronics last year, Minnesota Public Radio reports. Stores in Minnesota collected nearly 10 million pounds -- more than any other state.

"About half of the weight we collect is TVs, and most of that is still the old tube TVs," Leo Raudys, the retailer's senior director for environmental stability, told MPR. "So there's quite a bit more out there than you would imagine. About 30 percent of the rest of the weight is computer monitors. Again, very heavy. A lot of glass. And the rest is made up of things like desktops and laptops and miscellaneous electronics."

Minnesota Public Radio says the Richfield-based consumer electronics giant receives money from gold and other valuable materials recovered from e-waste. Some electronics manufacturers also pay Best Buy for helping them meet government recycling mandates.

The retailer has vowed to recycle one billion pounds of consumer electronics and appliances by the end of next year, according to Best Buy's website.
