Best freshwater beach in America? Minnesota's nominee may prove Superior

Even when we're having a heat wave, March is still a little early for beach season in Minnesota. But it doesn't hurt to plan ahead.

Before those big blankets hit the spin cycle, the travel editors at USA Today are already asking which of America's freshwater beaches is the best place to spread out for summer fun.

They've provided a Top 20 and want voters to decide which beach belongs in the number one spot.

Park Point Beach in Duluth is on the list – and was moving up in the standings late Friday (you can cast a vote here).

Park Point is six miles long and while beaches and dunes extend the length of it, GoDuluth notes that the centerpiece is about four miles beyond the Aerial Lift Bridge, where there's a beach house and lifeguard station.

Open from the day after school lets out through Labor Day, they say there's almost always a sand volleyball game in progress there.

If you like history with your recreation, a feature on Park Point in Lake Superior Magazine a few years ago pointed out that Duluth got its start there. GoDuluth says the ruins of the city's first lighthouse are still visible about a mile from the beach and a short-lived amusement park called White City was there from 1906 through '09.

Another Superior choice

Also among USA Today's candidates for best freshwater beach is Julian Bay Beach, which is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Voting in the contest for best freshwater beach continues through 11 a.m. Monday.
