Beyond the boo: Halloween tailgating, eats not treats

Halloween itself is changing its costume this year, with updated celebrations of the the holiday. It includes a new way for some kids to collect treats, and a way for others to collect more than treats as they go door-to-door.

The Pioneer Press has a story on the trunk-or-treating trend. The activity lets costumed kids wander between decorated cars in a parking lot to collect treats. The story said a number of metro area churches have added such events prior to All Hallows Eve. Red Wing, Minn. put on its fifth annual trunk-or-treat last week, bringing some 2,000 revelers to the roped-off streets in the downtown area.

This year, some costumed kids will ask for more than candy. The We Scare Hunger campaign asks trick-or-treaters to collect canned goods and other non-perishable products for food shelves as they wander the neighborhood.

Golden Valley-based General Mills is the sponsor of the month-long campaign. On its blog Taste of General Mills, the company said that last year students from 1,500 schools collected an estimated 875,000 pounds of food. This year's We Scare Hunger goal is 1 million pounds.

Minnetonka Patch reported that students from Minnetonka High School and middle schools are taking part in the drive. Their donations will go to the local ICA (Intercongregation Communities Association) Food Shelf. A truck from the organization will be at Minnetonka High School on Halloween night to collect the food.
