Bicyclist killed in collision with Blue Line light rail train

The victim died at the scene.

A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a Blue Line light rail train on Tuesday evening

The incident happened at 6:45 p.m. at the East 42nd Street and Hiawatha Avenue crossing, with the victim believed to be a man from Minneapolis.

The warning gates at the intersection were lowered at the time, the bells were sounding the the lights were flashing, Metro Transit spokesman Howie Padilla told BMTN.

Now investigators are trying to piece together how the cyclist came to be in the train's right of way at the time.

Services were delayed for more than an hour while responders attended the scene.

"We want people to heed the warnings of gates, bells and lights," Padilla said. "If they are operating, it most likely means trains are passing."

Metro Transit says it's the 14th fatality since the Blue Line opened in 2004, and it's the third time a biker has been killed.
