A bicyclist in Independence was seriously injured after colliding with a car Wednesday.
According to West Hennepin Public Safety, a 29-year-old woman from Delano was driving a Chevrolet Traverse when Tracey Smith, 55, "unexpectedly" crossed Highway 12 without stopping at a stop sign on County Road 90, the driver told police.
The driver said she was unable to avoid a collision and stopped immediately afterwards to help Smith and call 911.
North Memorial Air Care transported Smith to a hospital. Highway 12 closed for about two hours as responders attended to the crash, which remains under investigation by West Hennepin Public Safety.
After dozens of deadly crashes along Highway 12, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has slated the highway for safety improvements in 2021, including adding a roundabout at the Highway 12 and County Road 90 intersection.
This intersection had 22 crashes, with one serious injury, from 2011 to 2015, the Star Tribune reported in 2018.
