Staff at Living Hope Church in Little Falls said they expect a large crowd of mourners at a Saturday memorial service for 17-year-old Nick Brady and his cousin, Haile Kifer, 18, KARE 11 reports.

Investigators believe the two were attempting a burglary at the home of a 64-year-old man who told investigators he fatally shot them in his basement on Thanksgiving Day.

On Friday, KARE interviewed the slain cousins' siblings.

Nick Brady's sister, Rachel Brady told KARE said her brother "didn't have enemies and that "everyone liked him."

Dillon Kifer, Haile Kifer's brother, also noted of his sister, "She was always happy and always had a smile on her face."

The homeowner in the case, Byron Smith, has been charged with second-degree murder. He has hired Steven Meshbesher of Minneapolis-based Meshbesher & Associates, the St. Cloud Times reports. Meshbesher pleaded for the case to be tried in the courts, not the media.

"I ask that media representatives be patient and allow the legal process to run its course," he said in a statement. "I also ask that everyone please respect the privacy of Mr. Smith’s immediate and extended family. This is a tragic incident for all involved."

The case has prompted nationwide debate about how far homeowners can go in protecting themselves and property in their homes.

The Christian Science Monitor examines whether "stand your ground" laws specifically put prank-prone and reckless teens in danger.

Laws vary state to state. The standard for self-defense is higher in Minnesota than it is in North Dakota, the East Otter Tail Focus reports.
