Bike recall over potential disc brake problem includes Minnesota maker

Safety officials and bicycle makers have announced a recall of 1.3 million U.S. bikes, including some sold by a Minnesota company.

Quality Bicycle Products of Bloomington is one of 13 companies involved in the recall over a quick release lever on bikes that have front disc brakes.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says if it's left open or not adjusted right, the lever can come into contact with the disc brake rotor on the front wheel, which could cause a rider to crash.

The recall involves only bikes with disc brakes, not rim brakes. It includes bikes made as early as 1998.

Quality Bicycle Products makes Civia Cycles, which are among the affected brands.

The Bicycle Product Suppliers Association worked with safety officials on the recall and explains how to figure out if your bike is affected.

The Business Journal says safety officials have received three reports about incidents caused by the quick release lever, including one that caused injuries.

Owners of bikes that are part of the recall should contact one of the companies (listed here) for free installation of a new quick release lever.
