At Capitol, 'Black Lives Matter' protesters call for justice

A crowd estimated at 2,000 people rallied at the State Capitol in St. Paul Monday afternoon, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to call attention to what they believe is racially motivated mistreatment by police. It's part of a nationwide series of #ReclaimMLK marches organized by Black Lives Matter.

Several speakers, including family members of Marcus Golden, who was killed by St. Paul police last week, called for an end to racial profiling by police, an independent review board to review police actions and other steps to improve relationships between law enforcement and residents of color in the Twin Cities.

Golden, 24, was killed when police responded to a 911 call about a man making death threats to a woman in an apartment building. His family has called for calm while the police complete their investigation of the case.

The marchers stopped to hold "die-ins" at a few locations along their way, including on the Hamline Avenue overpass above Interstate 94 and in front of the St. Paul Police Department's Western District headquarters building on Hamline Avenue, according to MPR News.

The march began at University and Snelling Avenues around 1 p.m., but the crowd took a different route than originally planned, and headed toward nearby Interstate 94.

Police and state troopers blocked the entrance ramps onto I-94 to prevent the marchers from getting onto the freeway and stopping traffic.

After a brief standoff the protesters turned away and resumed their march toward the Capitol on University Avenue, according to the Star Tribune.

The marchers temporarily slowed down or halted auto and light rail traffic in the area. Police were present along the march route, in part to direct traffic and keep the march orderly.
