Police are investigating after a 17-year-old boy drowned in Coon Lake in Anoka County on Saturday.

Deputies were dispatched to Coon Lake Beach at 5455 193rd Ave. NE in Columbus – just east of East Bethel – at 8:05 p.m. on a report of a possible drowning.

People at the beach were able to get the teen to shore where they and deputies from the Anoka County Sheriff's Office performed CPR.

Sadly, the 17-year-old was pronounced dead after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. He has been identified as Tim Cao Nguyen, of Blaine.

The sheriff's report says Nguyen was swimming at the beach with two friends when he began struggling in deeper water, then went under.

The case remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and HCMC.
