BMTN Gives Back: Supporting cancer patients with the Angel Foundation

The goal is $500,000.

A half-million dollars, raised in one night, with the money going to support local adults with cancer, and the families that support them.

The Angel Foundation – which has raised $5 million and helped more than 22,000 people since 2001 – will host its annual Angel Gala Saturday at the Hilton in Minneapolis.

Last year, the gala passed that $500,000 mark for the first time, and the goal is to do it again.

“It’s not only our biggest fundraiser of the year, but a night of tremendous hope and inspiration," Mark Wilkening, Angel Foundation president, said in a release. "The gala sets the stage for what we can do for adults with cancer and their families in 2015.”

The event includes live and silent auctions, an "inspiring program" and dinner. Afterward, it'll be a dance party hosted by disco tribute band Boogie Wonderland.

A list of some items up for auction can be viewed here. A few examples:

  • A limousine-chauffeured microbrewery tour, plus dinner for 14 people.
  • Interactive cooking with Andrew Zimmern of "Bizarre Foods" fame.
  • Grand View Lodge overnight golf package.
  • Tickets for different sports games and art shows.

Close to 1,000 guests are expected to attend – tickets are $195 per person, and are available by phone until 4 p.m. Friday (612-627-9000), or bought on-site starting at 6 p.m.

Rick Kupchella, founder of BringMeTheNews, is emceeing the event. Alexis Thompson of MyTalk FM 107 morning show and Emily Engberg of Twin Cities Live will also be on-hand.

The Angel Foundation

The roots of the Angel Foundation go back to 1964, when a 16-year-old Edina athlete died of Leukemia. Two of his good friends – Mark and Margie – grew up and, inspired by their colleague, began working in the fight against cancer.

The two married in college, and afterward, Mark Sborov started an oncology practice; Margie created a patient advocacy role.

In 2001, the two founded the Angel Foundation, a nonprofit to help cancer patients deal with the difficult financial situations that can come from treating the disease. That includes emergency financial assistance, education, and support.
