Three people were injured in a boat crash in extreme northern Minnesota early Saturday morning.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, a boat crashed on Crane Lake in Voyageurs National Park, near the Canadian border. It happened around 12:30 a.m.

First responders discovered a 24-foot boat that had hit the southern tip of Indian Island. The crash was caused by a mechanical issue with the spotlight malfunctioning, causing the driver to lose light and sight. He slowed down but still struck a rocky edge of the island.

A 33-year-old woman was uninjured while a 60-year-old woman from Grasston, Minnesota, suffered significant injuries and was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

The 37-year-old Minneapolis man driving boat and a 65-year-old man from Grasston suffered minor injuries and were taken to Cook Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation but alcohol did not play a role, the sheriff's office says.
