A boat was destroyed by a fire that sent a large plume of smoke over Lake Minnetonka Sunday.

The Long Lake Fire Department says the evening blaze was reported on Smith's Bay, with the department posting several pictures showing the craft well ablaze.

There were three people on the boat when the fire started, and they were able to get to safety before it took hold.

"This is an important reminder that even though you are on the water, boat fires can spread very quickly," the department said on its Facebook page.

"Just like at home you should have a fire emergency plan and practice it. Always have appropriate fire extinguishers on board. Make sure they are easily accessible and train all boaters on how to use them."
