The 40-year-old passenger on a boat that hit a rock face in the St. Croix River this week was a harbormaster, the Pioneer Press reports.

David J. Riley, New Richmond, Wis., was in the 40-foot Formula 400 Super Sport boat on a pleasure cruise Wednesday when it crashed north of the Kinnickinnic State Park beach on the Wisconsin side of the river. Two other Wisconsin men were injured. Boat owner and operator Patrick A. Puhalla, 46, was hospitalized and in good condition Thursday, and passenger Daniel M. Schultz, 55, was treated and released, the newspaper reported.

Riley was the harbormaster at Windmill Marina in Afton, the Pioneer Press reports. He was a veteran boater who grew up in Inver Grove Heights and graduated from Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, the newspaper reported.

Investigators are examining a number of potential factors that may have contributed to the crash, including the cabin cruiser's speed, as well as visibility at the time of the crash, which was late on a moonless night. Alcohol was found on the boat, but it has not been determined if it was a factor in the crash, investigators said.
