Minneapolis police are investigating a death after a body was found in close proximity to a fire early Friday morning.

At 2:36 a.m., Minneapolis Fire Department responded to a small fire on the 1800 block of Central Ave. NE. Firefighters doused the flames inside a building and then found a body "in close proximity."

Investigators called to the scene ruled the death suspicious, leading to homicide detectives initiating a suspicious death investigation. The Minneapolis Crime Lab processed the scene while detectives and officers spoke with residents in the area.

The body, believed to be that of a man, will undergo an autopsy at the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office to determine an exact cause of death and provide identification.
