Body found in search for missing UMD student

Search teams looking for a missing University of Minnesota-Duluth student have found a body.

Duluth Police Department said the body was found around 3 p.m. in the Minnesota Slip at Canal Park.

Police have been searching since last weekend for 21-year-old UMD student Jacob Lavoie, of Inver Grove Heights, who was last seen at Grandma's Sports Garden around midnight Saturday, Aug. 31.

While Duluth PD has not identified the body, Lavoie's family have confirmed it is his.

In a statement released to the Duluth News Tribune, Lavoie's family said: "We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to law enforcement, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the entire Duluth community, the Inver Grove Heights community, as well as everyone far and wide for your caring and concern in helping us locate Jacob."

Lavoie had just started his senior year at UMD, the newspaper notes.
