Body of Gunflint Lodge fishing guide found in Ontario lake

The body of a longtime northeastern Minnesota fishing guide was recovered Sunday in an Ontario lake, three days after he was thrown into the water in a boating accident, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

Dennis Todd, 59, had been a fishing guide for 25 years at Gunflint Lodge, a well-known resort on the Canadian border, and he and a new lodge staffer had been fishing on Northern Light Lake on Thursday afternoon, the newspaper reports. The lake is a short portage from another lake not far from the lodge. The two had been on their way back when their boat hit something in the water and they were tossed overboard. Todd was not wearing a life jacket, and he did not resurface, the News Tribune reported.

His companion was wearing a life vest and she swam to an island and signaled to other boaters, the newspaper reported.

Gunflint Lodge operator Sue Kerfoot said the boat had made an unexpected 90-degree turn. She wrote lovingly about Todd in a blog post on Sunday, noting that the spirited, entertaining guide would feed walleye to an eagle from the boat.

There have been several high-profile fishing-trip fatalities involving Minnesotans this year. Grocery-store founder James Kowalski died in a float plane mishap on a fishing trip earlier this month.

In June, a southern Minnesota man died after falling out of a boat during a fishing trip on Manion Lake, in northwestern Ontario.

Earlier this year, a well-known Bayfield, Wis., fishing guide died after his snowmobile went through the ice on Lake Superior.
