The body of a Minnesota native has been found weeks after he was caught in an avalanche in California's Sierra Nevada.

Michael David Meyers was buried beneath snow that fell in a 60-70 foot-long avalanche earlier this month, with his body found on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The 25-year-old native of the St. Cloud area had not been heard from since Nov. 5, when he texted his roommate to say he was going to Mount Russell in the Inyo National Forest, the newspaper notes.

At the time, the mountains were said to be "slammed by a winter storm" with winds of up to 100 mph.

The St. Cloud Times reports that Meyers graduated from St. John's Prep in 2008 and then studied physics at Drake University in Iowa.

St. John's Prep history teacher Lance Nydeen told the newspaper Meyers took an interest in extreme outdoor sports, adding: "I think he enjoyed life, he enjoyed people and enjoyed experience."

According to CBS, Meyers was an experienced hiker and climber who would go on excursions alone for days at a time. He was a graduate student in physics at UCLA, the LA Times notes.

Meyers' body was found about 11,000-feet up in an area of the Sierra Nevada by rescue teams searching with sonar and dogs. KTLA reports he suffered major injuries in his fall, which local police described as being hit "in a head-on accident at 100 mph."

St. John's Prep posted a comment on its Facebook page on Tuesday, saying: "Please pray for Michael Meyers '08 and his family. We are heartbroken over the news of his death."

Using a dog team and sonar, search-and-rescue crews found the 25-year-old man’s body on Saturday.
