Body of Winona State student pulled from Mississippi River

Chukwudi Benjamin Onyeaghala went missing Oct. 7.

The body of a Winona State University student who went missing more than a week ago has been found in the Mississippi River.

Nineteen-year-old Chukwudi Benjamin Onyeaghala, who went by Ben, was last seen the night of Oct. 7. Surveillance video obtained by police showed a man who looked like Onyeaghala walking near the Mississippi River that night, and investigators spent the weekend searching the river.

KTTC reports Onyeaghala's body was pulled from the river near Homer, a township just southeast of Winona, Tuesday morning. Winona State University's Denise McDowell confirmed the White Bear Lake native's death in a statement, asking that people keep his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers.

“During this difficult time, gently connect with those among us who may be struggling with acceptance and understanding. May we find peace and the strength to endure as we remember Ben’s life and the good times shared," McDowell added, noting counseling and support services are available for students.

Onyeaghala enrolled at Winona last fall. He was majoring in Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences: Movement Science, WSU says.

The Olmsted County Medical Center will perform an autopsy to determine how Onyeaghala died, the Winona Daily News reports.
