Authorities searching the Mississippi River have found a body believed to be that of a University of Minnesota student who was swept into the river last month.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office confirmed that teams searching for 22-year-old Chris Stanley pulled a man's body from the river near the Lake Street Bridge at around 4 p.m.

Although the identity of the body has not been confirmed, Stanley's mother Melissa Melnick posted on Facebook that police believe they have recovered her son's body.

She was helping canvass for information about her son at a park on the Mississippi's west bank in Minneapolis when officers found her and told her the news.

"We'll know more tomorrow as they perform an autopsy and identify definitively my baby," she wrote. "I thank you for all your prayers and love. I continue to pray for those whose loved ones have yet to be found."

Stanley and a friend were pulled into the river after being hit by a "wave" that came by at Water Power Park, upstream from the Lake Street Bridge, on Tuesday, Apr. 25.

The river took them over St. Anthony Falls and while the friend managed to get himself to shore, he wasn't able to find Stanley.

Stanley is a bio science major, according to University of Minnesota online records. He is a member of the UMN’s Mindfulness Club, and the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group described Stanley as "a standout individual, a student and organizer with a passion for environmental, economic, and racial justice not only in his work on campus but in his community."
