The body of a man was recovered Monday after a truck crashed into the Straight River in southern Minnesota.

The crash happened just before 12:45 p.m. in an area south of Owatonna in Steele County. A Toyota Tundra traveling south on I-35 left the roadway, broke through a guardrail and plunged into the Straight River, which runs east to west under the interstate there.

By the time emergency personnel arrived at the scene the truck was completely submerged in water and the sole occupant of the vehicle was dead.

The victim has been identified as Ray Eldon Mudgett, 71, of New Richland, Minnesota.

A college student driving northbound on I-35 told KSTP she witnessed the crash, saying the truck entered the freeway from a ramp and then crossed all lanes of traffic before crashing through the guardrail on the other side of the road.

Mudgett's body was recovered during a search, assisted by the State Patrol, Steele County Sheriff's Office, Owatonna Fire Department, Minnesota DNR, and Rice County Dive Team.
