A body was recovered from a pond in Maplewood Thursday, two days after authorities were alerted to a person from a homeless encampment struggling in the water.

According to the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, deputies recovered a body from a pond near a homeless camp near the Ramsey County Maplewood Library at 3025 Southlawn Drive, which is just south of Interstate 694 and Hwy. 61.

Authorities were informed about the body in the water by a volunteer with the Wings of Hope Search and Rescue organization. The man's body was pulled from the pond and transported to the county medical examiner's office for autopsy and identification.

Two days prior, at approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to the same location on a report of a homeless person going into the water and not resurfacing, and at one point the 911 caller said they could hear the man struggling in the water.

The initial search for the man was hampered by murky water and dense weeds, the sheriff's office said.
