Bomb explosion at busy NYC transit hub an 'attempted terrorist attack,' mayor says

The lone suspect reportedly had the device attached to his body.

What happened?

An explosion was reported at a transit terminal at 42nd Street and 8th venue in Manhattan around 7:30 a.m. eastern time.

The cause was an explosive device being worn by the lone suspect, identified as Akayed Ullah, NBC News reported. NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miler said it was a pipe bomb Ullah had attached to his body with velcro and zip ties, according to NBC News.

Ullah, 27 years old, is in custody and was taken to the hospital, FDNY said.

The Port Authority station is one of the busiest bus terminals in the world and also connects to the NYC subway.

Was anybody hurt?

Three people who were near the explosion when it happened were hurt, but fortunately have just minor injuries, the New York City Fire Department tweeted.

No deaths have been reported.

Grainy video taken off a screen shows the moment of the explosion.

Was it a terror attack?

"Let's be clear – this was an attempted terrorist attack," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted

The bomb apparently went off prematurely, the New York Times reports. Authorities haven't found any other devices.

The suspect, Ullah, set off the bomb "in the name of ISIS," former New York Police Department Commissioner Bill Bratton said on MSNBC, according to the Washington Post. He said he'd gotten the preliminary information from his police sources.

"We are a target because we prove a society of many faiths and many backgrounds can work – we show democracy can work," de Blasio tweeted. "But we are the most resilient place on earth. We've proved it time and time again."
