Bones found at Wadena County farm not human; investigation 'ongoing'

The bone fragments found on a Wadena County farm are not human.

The county sheriff's office in a news release Thursday said the fragments – which were discovered in August after authorities got a search warrant to look for human remains at the site – are "not of human origin."

Sgt. Amy Ament, an investigator with the Wadena County Sheriff's Office, told BringMeTheNews the bones were from an animal, but didn't say what type.

Ament said the fragments were collected and sent to the medical examiner, which then brought in an anthropologist.

At the time they were found, it was said the search warrant was not related to the missing persons cases of Jacob Wetterling or Carla Anderson, despite talk it might be – Ament reiterated Thursday that those cases weren't involved.

Ament said this case dates back about a year, and described it as a "witness incident" – but said she could not get into more details.

There is no suspect at this time in connection with the case, but the investigation is ongoing, she said.

KARE 11 spoke to the owner of the farm, Dan Hansen, when the search was happening. He said he was surprised when law enforcement officers showed up with a search warrant and a backhoe.

He also told the station his father ran a zoo on the farm for a while, and thought there might be some leftover animal bones.

Investigators dug up an area about the size of a tennis court in an old excavation dump on the 160-acre farm, the Associated Press said.
