A 39-year-old Loretto woman was hit and killed by a box truck while crossing the street in a wheelchair in Plymouth Monday.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the woman was crossing the southbound Interstate 494 off-ramp crosswalk when she was hit by the truck around 11:08 a.m.
The woman has been identified as Jessica Marie Arel. Details about the driver of the truck have not been released.
Assisting the State Patrol was the Plymouth Police Department, Plymouth Fire Department and Allina Ambulance.
The crash forced Highway 55 to be closed for an "extended period of time," the State Patrol said.
More than 100 people have died on Minnesota roads this year, preliminary data show. The state hit the grim milestone on April 21, which is earlier than normal.
Of those who have died in traffic-related incidents, at least 11 have been pedestrians and at least 22 people were killed in crashes with heavy vehicle trucks, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety says.
