A 10-year-old boy was honored at his school in Grand Forks, N.D., Friday for donating large sums of his own money to charities, the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead reports.

Jak Urlacher was greeted by cheers at a school assembly at Phoenix Elementary School, which recognized his annual donations to Pennies for Patients, a charity which collects spare change from students across the country for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Phoenix Elementary raised $1,204 for charity this year, and nearly a third of that came from Urlacher.

Over the past five years, Urlacher has donated $1,000 of his own money to charity.

Friday's ceremonies included an opportunity to meet a student who has benefited from Pennies for Patients.

The Forum says Ellen Bailey, a fourth-grader from Larimore, N.D., was recognized Friday at Phoenix Elementary for her cancer-free status from leukemia.
