Boy killed in play equipment accident in southern Minnesota
A 10-year-old boy has died after a tragic play equipment accident this weekend.
The incident happened at an address near Le Sueur, in Sibley County, with the sheriff's office saying the boy had been struck by a piece of play equipment and was unresponsive around 7:35 p.m. Sunday.
He was taken to the Mayo Clinic Health System hospital in Mankato with severe upper body injuries.
Unfortunately, the boy died from his injuries in the hospital.
A friend of the victim's family told BMTN that it happened when monkey bars on a playground set collapsed, causing the boy and the play equipment to fall to the ground.
It's not been confirmed yet whether the accident happened on public or private property.
A Consumer Product Safety Commission study found that there were an estimated 1.46 million injuries nationwide associated with playground equipment treated in emergency departments between 2009 and 2014.
Of those, 61 percent occurred at parks while 14 percent were in home locations..
