Brainerd man drowns, child saved when canoe capsizes
A canoe capsized on the Gull River north of Baxter on Sunday afternoon, sending a man and child into the water.
The Brainerd Dispatch reports that residents heard cries for help were able to pull the 4-year-old boy from the river. The man, a 64-year-old Brainerd resident, was swept downstream where he was pulled from the water. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s office reported that attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The boy, from Gilbert, Ariz., was treated at the scene and transported by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.
The names of the victims were withheld pending family notification. Both were wearing life jackets.
