Law enforcement officials said a 15-year-old boy shot and wounded his 14-year-old girlfriend Monday afternoon in Coon Rapids, then died by suicide a short time later.

The girl told police she doesn't think the boy meant to shoot her, FOX 9 reports.

"Despite the original assessment of the evidence present, the first shooting appears to be accidental," said Anoka County Sheriff's Office PIO Paul Sommer in a news release. "Why the 15 year old chose to commit suicide remains a question. This amounts to a horrific tragedy for both involved families."

Sommer said the two were in the boy's apartment in the 11200 block of Robinson Drive Northwest at about 4 p.m. when the incident occurred.

After the boy shot the girl he fled on foot. A short time later police found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, in an area between the apartment complex and a nearby high school. A handgun was recovered from the scene, according to FOX 9.

The boy's mother was in the apartment at the time of the shooting and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Sommer said the girl is being treated at Mercy Hospital and her injuries are not life-threatening, according to WCCO.

Sommer said police are still investigating aspects of the incident, including how the boy obtained the gun and what motive he had for the shooting, according to FOX 9.

The identities of the two have not been released.
