Icy roads lead to more than 100 crashes, spinouts during a.m. commute

Slippery roads and bridges Tuesday morning made for difficult travel conditions across the state, and resulted in numerous crashes and spinouts.

Monday evening's light snow left roads slick, the National Weather Service warned, and hard-to-spot black ice on many area roadways made matters worse.

Several traffic incidents, including spinouts, crashes and rollovers, were reported Tuesday morning, the Minnesota Department of Transportation's website shows. Lt. Tiffani Schweigert of the Minnesota State Patrol tweeted that between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. there were 116 crashes – seven that caused injuries – and 51 spinouts/vehicles off the road.

The State Patrol's incident report details one of the incidents that caused injury. A 27-year-old man was hurt when the pick-up truck he was driving down Highway 169 in St. Louis County left the road and rolled into the ditch.

The report notes the road was icy at the time of the crash.

Slippery roads were also an issue Monday night, when 172 crashes and 121 spinouts/vehicles off the road were reported across the state, Lt. Tiffani Schweigert of the Minnesota State Patrol tweeted. Twenty-nine of those incidents resulted in injuries, but none were serious or fatal.

Officials are asking drivings to plan for delays and allow plenty of distance between you and other drivers in case you hit some ice.

Wind chill advisory until noon

A wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon for much of the state. The combination of below-zero temperatures (the high in the Twin Cities Tuesday is 1 degree) and northwest winds is making it feel like 25- to 30-below zero outside.

Here's a look at some of the coldest wind chills this morning (for a full list, click here):

The coldest wind chills are expected around 7 a.m. Tuesday. These temperatures could cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, so be sure to wear a hat and gloves if you're spending time outdoors.

Following Tuesday's blast of arctic air, temperatures are expected to moderate this week.
