Brrring in the new year: Minnesota cold by the numbers

There are only so many ways to report that it is cold in Minnesota this week. Perhaps the best way at this point is with a few numbers:

Minus-43 – The temperature in Embarrass Tuesday morning, perhaps the coldest temperature in the state this winter season, according to MPR's Paul Huttner. It was the coldest spot in the nation Tuesday morning, the Star Tribune reported. Even the Los Angeles Times, which noted that L.A. would start the year in the 70s, took note of the cold in Minnesota.

Minus-41 – The wind chill temperature in Bemidji Tuesday night.

Minus-11 – The temperature expected for Wednesday morning in the metro, the coldest New Year's Day morning since 1993, according to WCCO.

Minus-9 – The high temperature forecasted for Hallock in northwestern Minnesota on Wednesday.

1 – The number of Decembers on record that have been colder than December 2013 was in International Falls, WCCO says.

19 – Finally, the good news ... a forecasted high near 20 for the Twin Cities by Saturday.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect for much of the state through noon Wednesday.

Here are a few more numbers – a glance at temperatures around the state as Minnesota ushers in 2014:

Twin Cities – Wednesday: high 0, low -9. Thursday: high 0, low -8.

Ely – Wednesday: high -8, low -33. Thursday: high -5, low -18.

Hallock – Wednesday: high -12, low -30. Thursday: high -8, low -8

Worthington – Wednesday: high -1, low -17; Thursday: high -1, low -5
