The Mall of America is not the only Minnesotan mall closing on Thanksgiving.

Tennessee mall owner and operator CBL announced Wednesday nearly all of its U.S.-based malls will close on Thanksgiving. They'll reopen at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

It means that CBL's only Minnesota-based mall, Burnsville Center, will join the Mall of America in not opening for Nov. 24.

Burnsville Center confirmed the closure in a press release sent to GoMN Wednesday, saying that department stores, movie theaters and retailers with exterior mall entrances will still have the option to open on Thanksgiving.

But the rest will have to wait till 6 a.m. Friday.

"We want to bring back the excitement of Black Friday shopping as the true start of the holiday shopping season and allow our employees, retailers, and shoppers to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with their families," said Stephen Lebovitz, CEO and President of CBL.

The 1.1-million-square-foot mall in the south metro has 150 retailers, with anchor tenants including Dick's Sporting Goods, Macy's, JCPenney, Sears and Gordman's.

According to CNBC, the decision was made because CBL found launching its Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day didn't make retailers much extra money.

That's because rather than encouraging more shopping, it just spread it over the two days, with CBL CEO Stephen Lebovitz telling the TV station: "It's lost its luster because we've diluted it. ... We want to bring back Black Friday and make it fun."

He also pointed out that many mall tenants – who pushed back against similar plans last year – have realized there's no huge benefit to open on Thanksgiving, and have also become more adept at selling their goods online on Thanksgiving.
