A former Burnsville swimming coach has been charged with sexual assaulting one of his students 30 years ago.

Alfred O'Neill, 61, was charged in Dakota County this week in connection with an allegation of sexual abuse that happened between 1987 and 1989.

The complaint was lodged by the victim after she spoke with someone at Safe Sport, a nonprofit set up in 2017 to investigate sexual misconduct within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

She told police she met O'Neill when she joined the Burnsville Swim Club at the age of 14, saying "O’Neill treated her as a favorite" and started spending increasing amounts of alone time with her when she turned 16.

When she was 17 and he was 31, he started sexual contact with her, which included intercourse and oral sex.

As part of the investigation, the victim (referred to as ABC), was asked to call O'Neill and talk about what happened, this is the excerpt of their conversation.

When questioned by police, O'Neill admitted having sexual contact with the victim, but says it didn't start until after she turned 18.

He has been charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
