Travelers in Minnesota are often advised to "allow extra time" when driving on winter roads covered with ice and snow.

This weekend you might want to put in some extra time before you hit the road, to make sure your planned route is actually open.

Detour signs are popping up like spring flowers in the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has a dozen projects that will slow traffic through the metro area. They've even put together a map that shows the whole dozen (click the map to enlarge it).

Of course, road work is happening across Minnesota. To look up the status of projects underway in each region of the state click here.

As for the dirty dozen detours in the Twin Cities this weekend, two are especially noteworthy because they involve busy Interstates.

I-94 in St. Paul will be closed between Highway 280 and Snelling Ave. from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. There will also be lane closures between Snelling and Dale.

It's part of a season-long project to rebuild or repair the bridges that cross over I-94 in St. Paul. This weekend crews will demolish the deck of the Prior Ave. bridge, with a new one slated to be ready in mid-August.

A portion of Interstate 35W in New Brighton and Arden Hills is also closed this weekend. Here, too, crews will be demolishing a bridge over the highway – in this case County Road E2. There will be no direct access from eastbound 694 onto southbound 35W. Details on that project are here.

Expect weekend delays, detours on I-94 east, I-35W

Interstate 35W in Arden Hills is closed in both directions between Interstate 694 and Highway 10 so crews can demolish the old County 10 Bridge. The closures continue through early Monday morning.
