'Cannabis-themed' sandwich shop to satisfy munchies in Minnesota

A Fort Collins, Colorado-based sandwich chain is hoping for plenty of the green stuff in Minnesota.

We're talking about money, of course.

Cheba Hut, a marijuana-themed sub shop founded in 1998, has filed franchising paperwork with state regulators, according to documents from the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

The psychedelic menu boasts sandwiches with names that would be right at home in a Colorado cannabis shop – like Jamaican Red, White Widow and Apollo 13 (a Greek chicken treat) – and "Cotton Mouth Cures." That's Cheba-speak for "beverages."

According to the Business Journal, all this and more could soon be in a strip mall near you, with the state having approved the company's application to franchise in Minnesota on July 2.

(As an aside, we should note that this was the day after medical cannabis became legal in the state)

The Business Journal says Cheba currently has 15 locations in Colorado, California, Oregon, New Mexico and Arizona, but its game plan for the Land of 10,000 Lakes isn't clear yet.

Regardless of the company's offbeat and humorous image, the burgeoning sub shop is no laughing matter.

In a 2012 Time magazine profile, Cheba Hut’s Chief Operating Officer Matt Trethaway said employees are not encouraged to break the rules, and that includes smoking on the job – "there’s no place to be stoned at work,” he commented.

Time says the restaurant got its start in Tempe near the University of Arizona, later popping up in other college towns as well.
