A Shakopee man is dead after the car he was driving went off the ice-covered Bloomington Ferry Bridge overnight.

48-year-old Steven C. Whiting was killed in the crash, according to a report in the Chanhassen Villager.

WCCO Radio's Adam Carter said a hunter discovered the car and deceased driver Friday morning. The name of the victim has not been released.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the car was traveling southbound on Highway 169 and was attempting to exit onto Highway 101 when the driver lost control, Carter said. The car went over the guardrail and fell 80-100 feet before landing on its roof, killing the driver.

KARE 11 says the man was 48 years old from Shakopee.

Recent winter storms have created treacherous conditions for drivers across Minnesota. The Pioneer Press says six people have been killed on wet or icy roads in the state since Monday, including another Twin Cities accident that killed a Lakeville high school student.

The newspaper says frigid temperatures through next week continue to make make for hazardous driving conditions.
