Car occupants trade gunfire on Grand Ave. in St. Paul

St. Paul police believe the occupants of two cars traded gunfire Thursday night on an upscale shopping stretch of Grand Avenue, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

A woman walking her dog just before 8 p.m. at Grand and Avon Street heard the gunfire and thought she had been shot at and called 911, the newspaper reports. But police believe she was not the target. Investigators think the people in the two cars, both eastbound on Grand, were more likely firing at each other, the Pioneer Press reports.

The cars sped north on Avon and no one got a good description of them, police said. There were no injuries, and police have no suspects.

Violent crime on stately Grand Avenue is relatively rare, but not unheard of. In December, police fatally shot a man who had robbed the Kowalski's grocery store on Grand at gunpoint.

Grand Avenue was in the news earlier this year for something even rarer: cougars. Two neighborhood residents reported seeing a mountain lion roaming the streets near Grand Avenue in May.
