Car splits in half after hitting tree, killing one and injuring four

The serious crash happened in Woodbury Saturday night.

One person was killed and four injured in a severe crash in Woodbury Saturday evening that saw a car split in half from the impact of hitting a tree.

The crash was reported shortly after 11 p.m. on Settler’s Ridge Parkway near Sundance Way, with responders arriving to find five casualties.

Woodbury Public Safety says a 2015 Honda Accord carrying five people was "split in half after striking a tree."

One of the occupants was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The other four were still inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by responders. Three were taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and one was taken to Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury.

"Investigating officers are still verifying identities of the patients and the victim and notifying families," Woodbury Public Safety said.

At this time, it's not clear what caused the crash, which remains under investigation.
