State authorities are at the scene of a police shooting in Burnsville, where officials say the suspect involved has been killed.

It happened at about 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, after a police pursuit involving a carjacking suspect near the I-35W and County Road 13.

According to a release from the Burnsville Police Department, the confrontation began when officers encountered a suspect driving a vehicle with stolen plates, "which the suspect (then) crashed."

A short time later, the release says, "police were notified the same male was involved in the carjacking of a female at gunpoint."

"Burnsville Police pursued the carjacked car and the suspect allegedly fired shots at pursuing officers before crashing the vehicle and continuing to fire at officers."

"Multiple officers returned fire," the release says, resulting in the death of the suspect — believed to be a white male in his 20s.

As per procedure when a police-involved shooting results in a fatality, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was dispatched to the scene to investigate.

Police have not released any other details as of Sunday evening.
