Deputies and carjacking suspects exchanged gunfire during a chase in northern Minnesota Friday evening.

Police had been called after a vehicle was taken by force at a business in Cass Lake, Cass County, at 9:24 p.m., with one of the suspects threatening the use of a knife during the carjacking.

A few minutes later, a Beltrami County deputy sheriff found the stolen vehicle in Ten Lakes Township, north of Cass Lake, sparking a pursuit during which the suspects in the stolen vehicle "began shooting at the pursuing deputy," striking his squad car.

As the chase continued, two deputies opened fire, with the stolen vehicle becoming disabled.

Those in the vehicle were arrested without further incident, with a handgun found inside the vehicle.

The deputies was not injured in the incident. The Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension has been informed and the deputies involved placed on standard administrative leave, as is customary when law enforcement uses firearms.
