A Carleton College student who was behind the wheel during a fatal car accident last year has been charged.

William Sparks, 21, of Evanston, Illinois, was charged Friday with careless driving, a misdemeanor, in the February 2014 crash that killed three people.

The crash occurred on Highway 3 at County Road 47 in Dakota County – less than three miles from Carleton College.

The criminal complaint says Sparks lost control on the slippery road and crossed into on-coming traffic where his SUV was hit by a semi. The Minnesota State Patrol determined Sparks failed to slow down on the snow-packed roads, which likely contributed to the crash.

If convicted, Sparks faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, KSTP says.

James Adams, 20, of St. Paul; Paxton Harvieux, 21, of Stillwater; and Michael Goodgame, 20, of Westport, Connecticut, (pictured above) were killed in the crash. They were all members of the school's ultimate frisbee team.

Sparks and another passenger Connor Eckert were injured in the accident.
