U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson has won re-election to a 13th term in Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District.

CBS was the first to declare Peterson the winner, but the Associated Press also joined in a few minutes later.

With nearly all of the precincts reporting, Peterson had nearly 54 percent of the votes to Torrey Westrom's 46 percent.

Peterson is the longest-serving member of Minnesota's congressional delegation, serving since 1993. He is the highest ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee.

Westrom is the first known blind person to ever be elected to the Minnesota Legislature.

He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1997-2003 and was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2012 representing Senate District 12, covering parts of Big Stone, Douglas, Pope, Grant, Stevens, Stearns, Traverse and Wilkin Counties.

Less than a year into his Senate term, Westrom announced plans to challenge Peterson in the seventh district.

The race was one of the most watched in Minnesota, as Republicans were eager to try and unseat Peterson.

The district was carried by Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election, so Republicans targeted the seat. Outside groups spent more than $8 million during the campaign.
