One man was shot in the leg when gunfire erupted at the East Towne Mall in Madison, Wisconsin, Saturday afternoon, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Madison police said the shooting took place about 2:50 p.m., after two groups of young men got into a dispute in the middle of the mall, News 3 reports.

One of them took out a handgun and fired at least one round. A 19-year-old man was hit in the leg and suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound, according to police.

Police department spokesman Joel DeSpain said the shooting was not related to terrorism and was not an "active shooter" scenario, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Shoppers and employees scrambled for cover when the sound of gunfire rang out in the mall.

DeSpain described it as a "chaotic scene," with some people running into nearby stores and hiding under garment racks and in back rooms. Many businesses closed their gates, the State Journal reports.

Police detained several of the young men involved in the dispute, but no one was immediately arrested, according to News 3.

The mall was closed for about three hours as officers began their investigation. It reopened about 6 p.m. But the State Journal notes many stores remained closed at that time after employees left.

Another Madison shopping center, West Towne Mall, was locked down in February after two gangs got into a dispute which ended in gunfire outside the mall, according to the State Journal.
