Charges: Armed man in grandma mask kidnapped man, held him for $500 ransom

The man is accused of forcing the victim out of a car at gunpoint.

A man wearing a "grandma Halloween mask" is accused of taking another man out of his vehicle at gunpoint and kidnapping him for a $500 ransom.

Kyle Martin Olson, 28, of Eveleth, was charged this week with kidnapping, kidnapping for ransom and second-degree assault, all felonies, in connection to last weekend's incident. His bail was set at $100,000, a news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says.

According to the criminal complaint:

Around 11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25, the victim (who was riding in a vehicle with two others) was forced out of the car near the intersection of Highway 7 and Iron Junction Road in Iron by Olson, who was armed and wearing a Halloween mask.

At one point, Olson fired his gun to threaten the victim, before taking him to his home on 6th Street Southwest in Chisholm. Olson accused the victim of sleeping with his girlfriend, saying he had to "pay up" and told him that he had to pay Olson $500 or he'd be killed.

The victim was allowed to use the phone to call someone to get the money. He tried his father several times throughout the night, and he finally answered early Saturday. The victim told him to bring as much money as he could to Olson's home, adding he was too scared to try and leave.

The victim's father contacted police, who responded to the home and arrested Olson. The victim told investigators that he believes the two others in the car with him that night knew what was going on and set him up.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident, noting additional arrests and charges are possible. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the sheriff's office or call 911.

If convicted, Olson faces up to 20 years in prison for the kidnapping for ransom charge; 20 years for the kidnapping charge; and seven years for the second-degree assault charge, plus possible fines.
