A 48-year-old Bloomington man has been charged for the killing of his wife and attempted murders of a 12-year-old girl and 29-year-old woman.

Jason Michael Mesich was arrested following a standoff with police after he fatally shot his wife at their home on the 8300 block of 15th Ave. in Bloomington just after 11 p.m. Sunday.

Officers arrived at the scene to find 47-year-old Angela Lynn Mesich dead in the garage, having been shot multiple times in the neck and torso. Moments later, police were alerted to two gunshot victims who were on their way to a hospital: a 12-year-old girl who was shot in the head and a 29-year-old woman who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her legs.

The charging document says the girl is still in critical condition and yet to regain consciousness and the 29-year-old is in serious condition, both at HCMC in Minneapolis.

Mesich, whom police could hear yelling inside the house, was in the basement "screaming, throwing items, and discharging firearms," a criminal complaint says. Mesich was eventually arrested and taken into custody.

He has been charged with one count of 2nd-degree murder and two counts of 2nd-degree attempted murder.

Mesich, who told investigators that he couldn't remember much from the night, did say that he and his wife were arguing about sex in the garage and that he likely emptied the magazine of the gun he used to kill his wife.

"I want to make sure she is dead," he said, according to the charging document.

Motive behind shooting of 12-year-old, 29-year-old

The 12-year-old girl and 29-year-old woman have been identified via GoFundMe as Makayla and Canisha, respectively. The online campaign says Makayla was holding her 1-year-old niece, Winter, when she was shot.

"She was found cradling Winter, whose [SIC] life she saved. She was shot somewhere in the back of the head," the online fundraiser story reads. "It is unknown how long she will be in the hospital or if she will ever fully recover."

Canisha, the 29-year-old mother of Winter, was shot three times, once in her leg, left hip and again in her right ankle. "Her hip and ankle were both shattered and broken," the GoFundMe reads.

The criminal complaint states that they are neighbors of Mesich, and that "a man suddenly walked up to them and began shooting at them" as they were moving items into a U-Haul parked in front of their house.

"They were in the process of moving out of their house late Sunday night when their neighbor fired rounds at members of the family," the campaign noted.

The motive for the shooting was explained as follows in the charging document:

Regarding the neighbors who were shot, Defendant stated that they were not good neighbors, and when asked why 12 year old Victim 2 was shot, he stated that maybe it was the opportunity. Defendant further stated that he hated all children. When asked further about shooting the neighbors, Defendant stated, “I may have spotted them,” or that possibly they had seen what happened to Victim 1.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families as they deal with the grief and recovery from this tragic and evil act," Bloomington PD spokesperson Mike Hartley said.
