Charges: Cub Scouts treasurer stole almost $2,500 from her own pack

A Cass County woman is accused of stealing almost $2,500 – from a Cub Scouts troop in Brainerd.

Ruth Ilene Stevens, 41, of Pillager, was the treasurer for Cub Pack 74, which meets at the First Lutheran Church.

She is accused of making withdrawals from the pack's account, with $1,090 taken in the first six months of 2015 and a further $1,355.24 taken between August 2015 and January 2016, according to a criminal complaint.

The alleged theft came to the attention of the Cub Master when he checked the pack's bank records and saw several check and cash withdrawals that were not for the use of the pack.

When quizzed about the withdrawals by police, Stevens admitted taking the money because she and her husband were having financial problems.

She told police she had intended to pay the funds back at some point, charges say.

She has been charged with two counts of theft and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
