A Cottage Grove man is accused of shooting at another vehicle as he drove on Interstate 35 in Lakeville earlier this week.
Joshua Taylor Keenan, 26, of Cottage Grove, was charged May 13 in Dakota County with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in connection to the May 11 incident.
According to the criminal complaint, a man reported to the Minnesota State Patrol that a driver of a Volkswagen Jetta shot at him as they drove north on Interstate 35 in Lakeville on May 11.
Using freeway cameras, state troopers located the vehicles involved and had the victim exit the freeway and wait for the State Patrol, charges state. The victim was "obviously shaken."
The victim told troopers he first saw the Jetta when it was in the right lane and he was in the left lane, charges say. Here's what the victim said happened next:
"The Jetta was behind a lower-moving semi-truck and victim passed the Jetta while in the left lane. The Jetta began to change lanes after it was a few cars behind him, including passing a line of cars in the median grass. As the vehicle approached County Road 10, the Jetta was back into the right lane while the victim was passing him (again) in the left lane. As victim passed, he observed the driver of the Jetta to be a male who had the driver's side window down and was pointing a handgun out the window.
"Victim was scared that he was going to be shot because the weapon was initially pointed through his passenger window. Victim then heard a loud shot and drove at about 85 mph in order to get away from the Jetta."
Officers with the Eagan Police Department, as well as state troopers, pulled over Keenan, the driver of the Jetta, and was taken into custody, charges say. The gun was found in a bag on the passenger's seat. It was loaded with a round in the chamber and five of a possible six rounds in the magazine.
The bag also had another magazine and another fully loaded handgun was in the glove box. A digital gun safe was found in the truck.
The victim identified Keenan in a photo lineup.
