The Eden Prairie man who turned himself in after his wife was found fatally stabbed Saturday morning is now facing criminal charges.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says Yevgeniy Savenok, 30, is being charged with the death of his 23-year-old wife, Lyuba Savenok. She was pregnant at the time, and the suspect is also being charged with the death of her unborn child.

According to the criminal complaint:

The victim's sister told police that Savenok had taken two young children to his car before grabbing a knife and attacking his wife.

The witness says she ran from the residence, dialing 911. She reported the 30-year-old left the home and drove away with the children shortly after.

Authorities say they found the woman unresponsive and transported her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Doctors performed an emergency C-section, but the baby died.

A couple hours later, the suspect turned himself in saying he 'just killed my wife.'

Other recent violent incidents

The same day, a 23-year-old man was arrested in southeastern Minnesota, accused of killing his girlfriend.

Kyle Allers has been charged with fatally beating and strangling the woman, WCCO reports.

And on Sunday, a Fargo woman was found dead in her home. Police tell the Forum that she died as a result of "homicidal violence," and that a male suspect has been arrested in connection with her death.

The issue of domestic violence

Here's a broader look at domestic violence in Minnesota, and how it impacts people every day.

(866) 223-1111

The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women has a 24-hour phone line at (866) 223-1111, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233 (or 1-800-787-3224 TTY). They also have a list of services here.

1 in 3 women

In the United States, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been physically harmed or abused by an intimate partner. That's according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

25 in 2015

And last year, 22 women and three men died at the hands of a partner or ex in Minnesota. That doesn't include the four children killed by their mother's boyfriend or husband, three men killed by an ex of the woman they were dating, and two who were “interveners” or bystanders in a domestic dispute.

Guns and abuse

According to the NCADV, having a firearm in the home increases the risk of homicide in domestic abuse cases by 500 percent.

The majority of Minnesota's victims were killed via gunshot, followed by stabbings and "other/unknown" causes, and strangulation, according to the Femicide Report.

21,000 calls

On any given day, domestic violence hotlines around the U.S. receive about 21,000 calls. That's 15 calls per minute, the coalition says.

Most abusers have done it before

Last year, 13 of the 22 women killed in domestic incidents in Minnesota were attacked by an offender who had a documented history of physical abuse.
