Charges expected against Little Falls man in killing of teen intruders

Morrison County authorities identified an 18-year-old high school student and her 17-year-old cousin as the victims of a fatal shooting on Thanksgiving Day.

Those who knew them are devastated by the deaths, and 200 people gathered Sunday for a vigil and balloon release, the Star Tribune reports.

Sheriff's deputies said the teenagers broke into the home of a 64-year-old man, who has admitted killing them. Second-degree murder charges are expected to be filed Monday against Byron David Smith. Investigators say Smith's actions went beyond self-defense. They also say Smith never called authorities, who were alerted the next day by a suspicious activity tip.

The shooting victims were Haile Kifer, a student at Little Falls High School, and her cousin Nick Brady, a former Little Falls student who had transferred to Pillager High this year. The school superintendent says grief counselors will be on hand all week.

Here's the statement from the school district on its website.
