An Andover man is facing manslaughter charges after authorities say he fatally punched a 25-year-old St. Cloud State grad outside of a Minneapolis club.
The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged 22-year-old Emmanuel Ogboru Thursday with first- and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the July 24 incident. Ogboru and the victim, identified as Awwal Adebayo Ladipo, were outside of a club at Lowry Avenue North and Penn Avenue North in Minneapolis a little before 3 a.m. that Saturday.
According to the charges, witness accounts and bystander videos show a fight involving multiple people, including Ladipo, prior to his killing. After this initial altercation, Ogboru can be seen walking up to Ladipo and punching him in the left side of the face, the criminal complaint says.
Ladipo fell to the ground unconscious and was driven to the hospital by friends. Tests showed he had suffered a skull fracture and significant bleeding in his brain, which required emergency surgery, the charges state. Two days later, Ladipo died at North Memorial Hospital.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined he died from blunt force head trauma.
Ogboru was arrested and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
A fundraise for Ladipo's family has brought in nearly $50,000 as of Thursday morning, with loved ones remembering the St. Cloud State graduate as a role model to his siblings, a huge fan of track and basketball, and a "highly motivated high achiever."
