Two Hutchinson men have been charged after they allegedly got into a fight and shot a man in the head while trying to buy drugs at a home near Grove City on Friday.
Christian Brown and Byron Jackson, both 23, are accused of going to a home in Acton Township to buy cocaine, but got into an argument that turned fatal, charges say.
Brown is accused of shooting Devon Remmel, 42, of Acton Township, in the head outside the home, killing him. While Jackson is accused of punching Remmel's brother so hard he fell to the ground, breaking his arm and dislocating his shoulder.
According to the criminal complaints, Brown and Jackson went to a home on 545th Avenue in Action Township around 10 p.m. to buy the cocaine. They were in the basement with two other men, including Remmel's brother, when they got into an argument about the transaction and one of the men told them to leave.
That's when Jackson punched Remmel's brother to the ground, breaking his arm and dislocating his shoulder, charges say.
Brown and Jackson pulled out guns and pointed them at the men before leaving the home, the men told police, the complaint says. Jackson told investigators they tried to pull out of the driveway but were blocked in by Remmel, who was driving a truck.
The two men from the basement were also outside as they were planning to go to the hospital to get Remmel's brother's shoulder checked out, they said.
Jackson said he asked Remmel to move his truck and then he, Brown, Remmel and Remmel's brother got into an argument.
Remmel's brother told investigators Jackson went after him, knocking him to the ground again. That's when he saw Brown shoot Remmel and then heard him say, "I have to find my brass." After finding the spent casing, Brown and Jackson left, the complaint states.
First responders declared Remmel dead at 11:15 p.m. The medical examiner said he died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Jackson was arrested Sunday night after law enforcement conducted a search at a home on Main Street in Hutchinson, the same street where Jackson lives, the Meeker County Sheriff's Office said. He is charged in Meeker County District Court with three felonies: first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault.
Brown was arrested at about 9:50 p.m. on Monday, with the sheriff's office noting they searched his home following his arrest. He is charged with three felonies: second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree assault.
Jackson and Brown were still listed on the Meeker County Jail roster as of Wednesday morning.
